I have extensive teaching experience as an Instructor at the Eastman School of Music and with my own private studio. I specialize in the following topics:
Jazz Composition & Arranging
Create convincing, stylistic compositions, and the expand these into larger works using historically-informed arranging techniques. Orchestrate your arrangement for groups of various size and instrumentation- from duo or trio to big band and studio orchestra. Refine your craftsmanship with a focus on unity of composition and economy of means.
Jazz Improvisation
Improvise stylistically in jazz and related contexts. Perform from a lead sheet and navigate chord changes. Sharpen your aural skills with efficient transcribing techniques. Develop professional ensemble performance skills.
Jazz & Commercial Bass
Improvise effective, stylistic bass lines for jazz and related contexts. Develop a strong, individual sound with efficient technique that enables facility and prevents injury. Explore diverse popular and international styles to prepare for the demands of a modern musical career. Available for double bass (upright) and electric bass guitar (4-6 strings).
Music Theory
Learn to read, study, and communicate effectively about music. Get additional assistance with your undergraduate- through graduate- level music theory courses. While I am familiar with a broad range of topics in music theory, I specialize in topics pertaining to tonal analysis and Schenkerian scholarship.
