Wind in the East (2024)
A selection from my second DMA recital, East Winds. I love writing for woodwinds, and they make a wonderful accompaniment for the double bass. If the instrumentation reminds you of Ron Carter's 1978 album Peg Leg, it's no coincidence- in fact, I also performed Robert Freedman's arrangement of "My Ship" on this recital!
In the Cloudy Water (2024)
Another piece featuring uncommon instrumentation written for the Eastman Chamber Jazz Ensemble, which I co-directed with Jack Snelling at the time (featured here on bassoon). The piece is a contrafact of Burton Lane's "On a Clear Day," with the arrangement drawing inspiration from the works of George Russel and Gerry Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band.
Just Visiting (2023)
This piece was written for my Master of Music recital as part of a full set of big band compositions and arrangements. This recording features my close friend and Eastman colleague John Hasselback III on flugelhorn. The simple tune disguises a rather challenging harmonic framework that alternates between key centers of E major and E-flat major.
You're Everything (C. Corea) (Arr. 2022)
This beautiful song by the late Chick Corea is one of my favorites, and I have arranged it for many different ensembles and occasions - but this arrangement for the Eastman Studio Orchestra, made during my study with Bill Dobbins, is my favorite. The studio orchestra is perhaps my favorite instrumentation to write for. It offers tremendous expressive potential to those willing to accept the technical challenges - something I hope I have demonstrated here.
